Where are the city limits of Brighton? The exact city limits of the proposed City of Brighton remain to be determined. On the other hand, there is a 21-square mile area of Sussex County, west of Lewes, Henlopen Acres, and Rehoboth Beach, that should be considered the primary geographical candidate within which Brighton should be created. I refer to this location as the Area of Influence. Below is a digitized aerial photograph of Brighton's Area of Influence, shot in 2002, with its boundaries marked in red.
This picture shows the Area of Influence superimposed on a highway map:
Here is a more detailed description: The Area of Influence is bounded on the south by Rehoboth Bay. The eastern boundary then runs north along the Lewes & Rehoboth Canal to the point where Holland Glade meets the Canal. The boundary then runs west along the Glade until it meets the old railroad right-of-way between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. It then runs north along that line until it meets Pot Hook Creek, where it shifts west along the creek to the eastern edge of the properties that front along State Route 1. The line then runs northerly to a point along Kings Highway (U.S. Route 9) and then to the east of the Five Points area up to the state-owned rail line running from Lewes to Georgetown. The northern boundary runs westerly along this railroad line to County Road 261. The line then runs southerly along Road 261, then Road 285, then Road 277, until it crosses Love Creek. At that point the boundary continues along a southerly path in the center of Love Creek until it reaches Rehoboth Bay. |
